European Union travel postponed until June 15

Over the weekend, the European Commission issued a statement enlightening that the COVID-19 situation “remains fragile both in Europe and worldwide” thus postponing the anticipated opening date for travel within the region and recommended to a 30-day extension of the current EU travel ban until June 15.

According to EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, there is a likelihood that the European Union will keep its external borders closed until this date. She stated that after June 15, lifting of the travel restrictions should be implemented in a “phased and coordinated” mode in order to prevent a second wave of the pandemic that could even seem more deadly.

Following the pandemic, EU member states shutdown their borders to travellers from outside the union. Some countries also moved in to close their internal borders to travellers, even those from fellow-member states a move which was frowned-upon in Brussels by the EU assembly.

However, the travel ban does not affect the UK since it is still in its Brexit transition phase and is still treated in many ways as an EU member. More so, exempted from the restrictions are Healthcare workers and other workers, including those transporting cargo.

European Union member countries have been one of the most hit by the pandemic with more than 1.5 million cases of coronavirus infection reported across Europe as of May 8th, with Spain, Italy, the UK and Germany among the worst-hit nations.
