The UK will donate £2.2 million to WHO, UNICEF, and WFP to boost Uganda’s response to the current Ebola outbreak, according to a statement from the British High Commission in Kampala. This will be divided as follows: £400,000 will go to the World Health Organization (WHO) to improve case investigation and contact tracing at the local level; £900,000 will go to UNICEF to help prevent the spread of the disease by improving sanitation and hygiene provisions in key installations, such as community health centres and schools, in the affected areas; and £900,000 will go to the World Food Programme (WFP) to support transportation.
In addition, a case management expert from the UK government has been sent to support WHO in Uganda at their request. Others are anticipated to deploy soon, including members of the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team. All deployments will be discussed and approved with the Ugandan government.
HE British High Commissioner to Uganda, Kate Airey OBE, stated: “In order to effectively combat this kind of outbreak, time is of the essential. The UK is assisting the government of Uganda and its allies in their response by offering both financial support that can help scale up delivery on the ground and specialists who bring knowledge of prior Ebola outbreaks in other nations. The Ugandan government and people can count on support from the UK as they fight this outbreak.”
The help that the UK has already given Uganda is expanded upon by this support package. In response to a significant epidemic in the DRC and a limited number of cases in Uganda itself, the UK provided over £10 million (more than UGX40 billion) between 2018 and 2020 to enhance Ebola preparedness in Uganda. This has helped the Ugandan government’s ability to respond to the present outbreak. For instance, the current outbreak is using ambulances that the UK earlier purchased through the WFP and later donated to the Uganda Red Cross.
