ADC and SEATINI mentor coffee farmers on price risk management

To meet the needs of producers and exporters of coffee and cocoa, the Agribusiness Business Development Centre, in collaboration with SEATINI, has just finished a two-day workshop on price risk management. 40 representatives of farm-based organisations from various parts of the East, West, and Central were hosted by ADC. The training concentrated on supply and demand, two key market fundamentals.

The ADC business consultants gave an in-depth market analysis to the training’s participants and emphasised the need for traders to constantly provide updates on the ground with relation to logistics management in order to gain the trust of their contractors.

The farmers are subject to a variety of hazards, both internal and external, according to Roland Ainebyona Rwambuka, a business advisor at ADC. Through this training, they will be better able to develop the tools and tactics they will need to reduce risks and increase productivity. Since there are dangers in any industry, it is the responsibility of the farmer to be well-equipped to manage them.

In 2022–2023, it is anticipated that global coffee production will increase by 7.8 million bags from the previous year to 175 million, mostly as a result of Brazil’s Arabica crop starting its on-year of the biannual production cycle.

The main partner in this PRM training Brendah Akankunda from SEATINI states, “Our main concern is to ensure that there are fair prices for the farmers, and that there are no rights abuses along the value chains, but importantly to encourage value addition because Uganda has been confined at the lower end of the chain. She added, ‘’we have spotted the need for capacity building during our numerous contacts with stakeholders, and this training is addressing that’’.

The major goal of ADC’s work is to make agriculture sustainable and self-sufficient.

Nassaga Investment Ltd.’s Wataaka Charles recounts the tale of how their coffee was rated as the best but was not being sold on the international market.

‘’I understand things locally because I am an ordinary farmer, but as the organization’s head, I also need to establish markets for the coffees we are producing. We were operating as an island, but the ADC’s introductory training helped open my eyes to how to negotiate for overseas markets and connect with other coffee producers. We actually had a buyer from the training in March who wanted to purchase our coffee, and we were required to negotiate and comprehend the terms and conditions that secured usa good deal.  I request that the ADC, SEATINI, and other stakeholders bring these trainings to our communities’’.
