Major players in the Ugandan and Kenyan tourist industries will participate in the inaugural conference and exhibition, which will be held in Mombasa, Kenya, with the theme “Strengthening Networks, Synergies and Diversity to Maximize the Tourism Potential between Uganda and the Kenya Coastal Region.” Along with the private sector participants in the tourism sector, the conference will bring together government ministries, departments, and agencies from Uganda and the Kenya Coastal region.

One of the most important economic sectors in the EAC region is tourism. The industry’s average contribution to export revenue is 17%, and its average contribution to GDP is a sizable 10%. Approximately 7% of the jobs in the region are produced by it.

The Minister for Regional Cooperation in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hon. John Mulimba during a press briefing said, “As a region, we need to promote destination East Africa to the world, but most importantly amongst ourselves, to harness the potential of the sector and grow our economies.”

Mombasa is a popular travel destination for Ugandans, and Kenya is the country’s key source market for tourists. Ugandan weddings increasingly take place along the beach region. Mombasa hosted at least 200 weddings for Ugandans in 2021.

The Consul General of Uganda in Mombasa, Ambassador Paul Mukumbya, said, “We must promote the potential of our two destinations to attract more tourists and investment in the tourism sector. This sector has linkages with other sectors of the economy, including agriculture, manufacturing, and the service sector, among others.

The co-host, who represents the Kenya Coastal Region, states that “partnership is necessary to market each other’s distinctive tourism attractions.”

Though countries like Uganda provide distinctive attractions like gorilla tracking that may be packaged by travel agents through synergies in both countries, many travellers from Europe and Asia visit Mombasa and end their trips there.

The conference and exhibition will be held on 17th November 2022 at the Pride Inn Paradise Beach Resort. Thereafter the Consulate with host a familiarization trip to Uganda from the 20th of November in partnership with the Uganda Tourism Association (UTA).
