UTB Launches The Explore Uganda App Aimed At Enhancing Tourism

The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), partnering with Total Energies Uganda, unveiled the Explore Uganda App, a mobile application designed to elevate tourism experiences for both local and international travelers exploring Uganda. By offering a comprehensive platform for discovering Uganda’s attractions, this app seeks to enhance accessibility to the country’s natural wonders, cultural heritage, and hospitality.

Speaking at the launch, UTB’s CEO Lilly Ajarova described the app as a forward-thinking approach to engaging today’s digitally savvy travelers. She highlighted that the Explore Uganda App represents more than just a travel tool—it’s an open invitation to experience Uganda’s landscapes, biodiversity, and vibrant culture firsthand. This initiative, she explained, is part of UTB’s larger mission to solidify Uganda’s position on the global tourism map, leveraging technology to enhance tourism’s contribution to national growth and visibility.

UTB Board Chairperson Pearl Kakooza emphasized that the app symbolizes a significant shift toward digital transformation in Uganda’s tourism sector. It addresses longstanding challenges like visibility and accessibility by offering travelers the autonomy to navigate Uganda’s destinations through curated itineraries, local accommodations, and cultural experiences. By doing so, the app aims to align with evolving traveler preferences for self-guided exploration, providing a streamlined, all-in-one guide.

Total Energies Uganda, which operates heavily in the North Albertine region near Murchison Falls National Park, views this app as a chance to foster sustainable tourism that supports local economic development. According to Pauline MacRonald, the company’s Biodiversity Director, the app will bring Uganda’s tourism offerings to a global audience, linking visitors with community-based tourism ventures, tour operators, and investors, thus amplifying Uganda’s socio-economic potential.

Developed by a talented team of six Ugandan women software engineers, Explore Uganda offers a range of features to enhance travel experiences. Users will have access to information on tourist attractions, dining, accommodations, real-time weather updates, and currency conversion options. Available in English, French, Swahili, Spanish, and German, the app also supports multi-currency transactions and provides on-demand customer support, positioning Uganda as a premier, digitally connected travel destination. Travelers can download it on both the App Store and Google Play, marking a significant step toward making Uganda’s tourism sector more accessible and adaptable to the needs of today’s travelers.
