Latest Survey indicates huge effect of COVID-19 on Africa’s Safari Industry

This month’s SafariBookings.com survey, an online marketplace for African safari tours,  indicates a wider effect of Corona pandemic on the safari industry in Africa though there are indications of improvement from previous surveys with some industry operators reporting a rise in enquiries and bookings.

This month’s survey was the eighth of monthly surveys operated by SafariBookings.com and was conducted among 294 safari tour operators in Africa. The survey continues to reveal a shockingly steep drop in business of at least 75%.

Worse of it all, this whole decline is still a massive issue with the coronavirus pandemic continuing to have a harsh economic impact on Africa’s US$12.4 billion safari industry.

The survey combines a comprehensive analysis of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic in the safari industry, and associated drop in international tourism arrival numbers.

According to the survey, the Safari industry operators have found hard times dealing with the pandemic given that most of the activities where halted.

“Most tour operators have experienced a disturbing decline in bookings of at least 75% which is unsustainable in the long term for most businesses. This is in line with the previous seven surveys we have conducted, with just a very small improvement in both enquiries and bookings received by operators differentiating this survey,” read part of the survey.

The survey also highlights that 90% of Safari operators claimed to have lost at least three quarters of the bookings they would usually receive around this time.

About 70% of operators who took part in this survey confirmed that cancellations on existing bookings had increased by at least 75%.  Not surprisingly, less than 10% of operators said it was business as usual.
