Acholi Cultural Festival gears up as organisers focus on Culture & Tourism

With the increased challenges of population growth, Civilization, migrations leading to cultural dilution, political instabilities in the northern region which greatly contributed to cultural erosion particularly in the Acholi region. The Kingdom of Acholi under the auspice of His Highness Rwot David Onen II for the people of Acholi will be hosting the third Acholi Cultural Festival this week from the 12th to 14th December at Boma Grounds in Kitgum district.

The Cultural celebrations which started in December 2016; are aimed at imparting culture and preserving it for the next  generations so as its not eroded away by western cultures and the entire civilisation tagged along.




During the three day Festival, lots of activities will be taking place including verbally communicating the effects of cultural erosion, Acholi marriage, Acholi food, drama, cuisines, dress tools, unique traditional music, dances, artifacts, protection both spiritually and physically plus promote tourism attractions in the region such as; Fort Patiko, Aruu Falls, Guruguru caves, Karuma Falls, Atika colobus monkeys, Amoro hotspring among many more others.

This year’s Festival received a sponsorship tune of UGX60 Million from Uganda Breweries Limited under the Pilsner lager brand.

Every year, the people of Acholi under the auspices of their cultural institution, Ker Kwaro Acholi hold the Acholi cultural Festival to celebrate their cultural heritage and traditions and this year, upto 25,000 people from across the different parts of the world including the Acholi spread all-over the world will attend. This year’s theme is ‘’My Heritage, My Strength’’

According to the organisers, previous editions have attracted over 10,000 people and this year they hope to have 25,000 people participating in the three day Festival.

There will also be a health camp and an exhibition as the festival kicks off with a procession through the streets of Kitgum.

Some of the notable guests expected for this years’ Festival include; Hon. Jacob Oulanya L’Okori, the Deputy speaker of Parliament, Deputy Chief Justice Alphonse Chigamoyi Owiny – Dollo, Hon Betty Aol Ocan, the leader of opposition in Uganda Parliament and woman member of Parliament for Gulu district, Hon. Henry Okello Oryem, the state Minister for Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for Chua East- Kitgum District and Hon Onek Hillary Abaloker, the Minsietr for disaster Preparedness and Refugees among others.
