Airtel Uganda in partnership with Buganda Kingdom for the 3rd edition of Kabaka’s Birthday run.

Mengo, Kampala–5th March, 2016–Airtel Uganda announced its sponsorship of this year’s Kabaka birthday run which will be held on 10 April, 2016. This is the third edition of the run which began in 2014 and also marks the third time Airtel Uganda is partnering with the Kingdom for the activity.

For the last two years, Buganda Kingdom has held an annual Kabaka Birthday Run to commemorate the Kabaka’s birthday and at the same time as a flag bearing fundraising vehicle towards the fistula eradication project run by the Kitovu Hospital.

Airtel Uganda Managing Director Mr. Tom Gutjahr expressed the Company’s enthusiasm at working with the Buganda Kingdom again. “This partnership has become a beacon of hope for the women suffering from fistula. Airtel Uganda believes in working together with our partners within the communities we operate. And this is what the Kabaka Run has availed us with- an opportunity to significantly eradicate suffering and pain for innumerable mothers and their families.

On behalf of Airtel Uganda, I would like to thank the Kingdom of Buganda for allowing us to be part of this noble cause. Last year we made a commitment to be part of this year’s Kabaka’s Birthday run. Today, we have fulfilled this commitment and are looking forward to a bigger and better event.We believe that with excellent team work, all of us will make a great contribution towards the eradication of fistula disease in Uganda.” Gutjahr concluded.

Speaking on behalf of Buganda Kingdom; Owek. Peter Mayiga; Katikiro of Buganda Kingdom said the celebration of the Kabaka’s birthday with a sporting event is a great way for the people of the Buganda to celebrate their heritage.

He also noted the great contributions made to women’s health and the development of the country through the run. “The health of women is crucial to the development of our country. That is why the Kabaka’s package is given to the mothers of our nation. Last year, UGX 70million was given to Kitovu hospital to eradicate fistula disease,” Owek Mayiga said.

He commended the kingdom’s partners whose efforts have seen the event grow from strength to strength.

Participants in the Kabaka birthday run will ran 5Km, 10Km, and 21Km routes. The registration fee for Corporate companies is UGX 2,000,000/- while individual runners will pay UGX 10,000/-
