American Jazz maestro Kirk Whalum to perform at Kampala Serena hotel

American award winning Jazz maestro Kirk Whalum will be performing this Thursday March 7th in the Rotary Uganda Charity Concert taking place at the Kampala Serena hotel.

Proceeds from this year’s ‘’Kirk Whalum Live’’ concert are geared towards procurement of equipment at the Rotary Blood Bank in Mengo hospital.

 


The Kirk Whalum jazz concert will begin at 6pm / 18:00hrs as tickets go for UGX200K and a table UGX5 Million.

Kirk Whalum is an American Jazz performer born in 1958 in Memphis, Tennessee. During his childhood, Kirk listened to a lot of Memphis gospel music which influenced more of his style of doing music.

His professional music career started off in Houston, Texas nightclub scene with a trademark called rich tenor sound in the early 1980’s. He later collaborated with legendary jazz pianist Bob James and this led to five most selling successful albums with Columbia Records comprising ‘’Cache’’, his first album.

He later relocated to Los Angeles where he blended his saxo-jazz-funk style as he played for Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, Barbara Streisand, Larry Carlton, Quincy Jones plus Whitney Houston. He made several music tours with now deceased songbird Whitney Houston for more than seven years and soloed in her hit single called ‘’I will always love you’’. Kirk has beyond 25 solo recordings including hit album ‘’For You’’ and ‘’Gospel according to Jazz’’ series with chapters 1, 2, 3 and 4.

His brand name has so far received three Dove Award nominations which include an NAACP image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards.

He stands an eleven times Grammy nominee as he won his first Grammy award in 2011 for the best Gospel Song ‘’It’s What I do’’ featuring Lalah Hathaway and gifted writer Jerry Peters.

Whalum is an ordained minister and constantly performs at nursing homes and schools as he also doubles as the creative advisor at the STAX Music Academy and STAX Museum of American Soul Music located in Memphis.

His first performance in Uganda is dated way back in 2015 during the eighth edition of the Nile Gold Jazz Safari, this will be Whalum’s second performance together with his band.

In this year’s jazz concert, Rotary Uganda wants upto USD500, 000 for the blood bank project.
