Delta Airlines resumes direct India flights after a decade

US operator Delta Airlines launched its first direct flights to India on Christmas eve after a decade.

The carrier became just the third airline to operate direct flights between India and the US – the others are Air India and United Airlines.

Delta formerly operated non-stop flights to India until 2009 but added a stop in Amsterdam until 2015. After which it ceased Indian flights amid cheaper alternatives offered by Middle Eastern carriers.

Delta currently uses Boeing 777-200 LR on its daily flights between New York and Mumbai.

Jimmy Eichelgruen, the airline’s director, sales for India, Africa and the Middle East, revealed that this; “fills the last remaining hole in our worldwide network”.

The US and UAE governments agreed last year to address the concerns of American carriers that Gulf airlines were allegedly receiving illegal government subsidies to offer cheaper flights on some routes.

Eichelgruen added that Delta would first see how its New York-Mumbai operated before adding more.
