01. Jacob Kiplimo Wins Gold at the 2022 Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon

Clocking a record time of 57:56, Uganda’s long distance runner Jacob Kiplimo won the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Kiplimo, who defeated top athletes including Kenya’s duo 2018
Commonwealth bronze medalist Rodgers Kwemoi, Kenneth Kiprop and Ethiopia’s Tura Abdiwak, started the race well and finished it off in style.

02. Only Ugandans returning home allowed to use yet to be phased out Machine-Readable Passports

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has revealed that despite the expiry of
old passports on April, 4, 2022, Ugandans abroad will be allowed to use them to return home.

This follows the introduction of the new East African E-passport that is
being emphasized as the modern national travel document. And therefore
government has mulled plans to have the old machine-readable passports (MRPs) phased out for the new ones effective April, 4, 2022.

Odur and first officers Kenneth Kiyemba and Alex Kakooza were terminated after thorough investigations had been concluded on regards to financial mismanagement, nepotism in staff recruitment and conclusion as these majorly affected operations of the national carrier leading to losses since the Uganda Airlines resumed operations in August 2019.

04. Israel to allow entry to unvaccinated travellers

Israel will allow unvaccinated tourists entry for the first time since the pandemic began as infections and deaths caused by the coronavirus decline, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced.

“We are seeing a consistent decline in morbidity data,” Bennett said. Israel
shut its borders to travellers in early 2020 as the coronavirus spread worldwide. “It is time to gradually open what we were the first in the world to close,” the Prime Minister said.

05. Roast & Rhyme organizers cagey on performers for upcoming edition

With less than a week to go, the organisers of the upcoming Roast and Rhyme – Swangz Avenue and Bell Lager – are being unusually tight-lipped about who will be performing at the picnic-style event.

According to the organisers, the Reggae Ragga Nyam Nyam edition, slated for Sunday 27th February at Jahazi Pier in Munyonyo will usher the public back “outside” with a bigger and better fun-packed day with friends, chill music, games, roasted meat and cold Bell Lager by the lakeside under the brand’s “Mpola Enjoyments” theme.

06. Dubai commands world’s busiest airport for 8th year

Dubai International (DXB) continues to be the world’s busiest airport by international passenger numbers for the eighth consecutive year after clocking 29.1 million in annual traffic in 2021.  DXB’s annual traffic exceeded forecasts for the year by more than half a million passengers, on the back of a strong last quarter.

Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, described an eventful year which, despite the uncertainties of the global pandemic, contained many milestones that demonstrate several bold steps taken by Dubai and its aviation sector to lead the recovery of global air travel.

07. Joe Walker, Friends launch a road safety campaign dubbed ‘Stay in your Lane’

Ugandan Broadcast Journalist and recently-converted fitness walking enthusiast Joseph Beyanga recently announced he will be walking 320kilometres from Kampala to Bushenyi to highlight road safety concerns in Uganda.

Beyanga said he would walk from Kampala to Bushenyi in honour of his
father, Emmanuel Batsikana, who walked from Bushenyi to Kampala in 1945 to
create a better life for his family and community.

08. How lockdown hobbies are the next big travel trend in 2022

After almost two years of lockdowns and restrictions, the pandemic has given many people the unique opportunity to get back to their roots, try new things and find new – or even rediscover past – hobbies. This is hardly surprising though, with numerous lockdowns offering little other than an increased amount of free time and encouragement from the government to keep ourselves fit and healthy.

Research from the British Medical Journal indicates that this ‘down time’ actually contributed to a rise in interest and engagement with physical activity, whilst Sport England revealed that 62% of adults consider that being active is more important now than pre-pandemic.

09. UNWTO, UEFA join hands to promote sports and tourism

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) have agreed to jointly promote the benefits of sports and sports tourism for development and opportunity for all, including young people.

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili and UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin recognized the values shared by tourism and football, both prominent people-led sectors with the capacity to promote understanding, friendship and solidarity and drive social and economic change.

10. Kenya Airways wants to downsize its Dreamliners & Embraer Fleets

Kenya Airways is reportedly looking at trimming its fleet of 787- Dreamliners by four aircraft and fleet of E190s by five aircraft.

Nairobi-based Kenya Airways is eyeing cutting its fleet from 36 planes to 27. The as yet un-confirmed move is part of a broader turnaround strategy that aims to cut costs and rejuvenate the airline. Kenyan media reports that Kenya Airways’ Boeing 787-8 and Embraer E190-100ARs fleets are set to shrink.
