Diani Places Top in Uganda’s Tourism Source Market at POATE 2023

Destination Diani, located on the coolest shores of the Indian Ocean on the East African coast, took part in the 7th Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE) 2023, which took place at the Common Wealth Resort in Munyonyo from April 26–29, 2023.

Destination Diani is situated in Kwale County and comprises attractions including the famous Wasini Dolphin tour, Shimba hills national park, Fuzi island, and Kisite marine park. The area is proud to be home to top-tier deluxe accommodation options and beaches with silky white sand, including Bamburi Hotel, Baobab Beach Resort and Spa, and Plan Hotel Hospitality Group, among many more.

Diani’s participation in this year’s Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo, the largest exhibition on the African continent, was intended to continuously tap into Uganda’s source market for tourism and emphasize her presence as the destination’s top priority for Ugandan travelers planning escapes to a tropical backdrop. As a result, the majority of Ugandans frequently visit each day of the week for tours, honeymoons, and holiday escapes, to mention but a few.

During the Destination Diani cocktail event, Ambassador Paul Mukumbya the Consulate General for Uganda in Mombasa mentioned how these expos and conferences help operators in the East African tourism sector network with one another.

“Last year, we hosted the Mombasa tourism conference that later followed a familiarisation trip to Uganda that saw 30 top coastal tour operators revel in Uganda’s unique attractions in western Uganda that got them acquainted with the country’s attractions and are now better able to sell the destination on their itineraries than before when they had no first-hand, eye-to-eye experience and information about the tourist attractions other than searching online,” he said. Such interactions, in my opinion, are crucial for us as East African countries.

He highlighted, “Diani is one of the most visited destinations by Ugandans, as the majority are always traveling there for fun, marriage proposals, weddings, and holidays, among various reasons, almost every day of the week. I, therefore, emphasize that while we promote Diani in Uganda, especially during POATE, as we go, let’s also effortlessly promote destination Uganda to the Kenya and Diani travel market segments.

Patrick Kinuthia, the reservations manager at Baobab Beach Resort and Spa, praised Uganda for hosting POATE 2023, which has provided them a platform to present the finest of their resorts and hotel facilities, in a statement made during the Destination Diani cocktail reception at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

He asserted, “Diani is home to some of the top hotel chains in the world, offering opulent experiences to travelers of all financial abilities. I urge the majority of Ugandans to come visit and actually feel what the Diani touch is like.

Doris Komen, commercial attaché at the Kenya High Commission, lauded the government of Uganda for hosting the POATE 2023 Exhibition that has enabled Kenya, among other countries, to showcase its tourism potential.

She revealed, ‘’the tourism sector in Kenya is one of the biggest economic sector with a value chain that supports other industries including Agriculture, manufacturing, ICT, transport, hospitality, medical, insurance, among others.

She added, “Besides being hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, Kenya’s tourism sector continues to grow at a recovery rate of 74.45%, accounting for 870,000 visitor arrivals in 2021. In addition, Uganda is the second-top tourism source market for Kenya, contributing 21,000 visitor arrivals in 2021, accounting for 20% of the total arrivals, which serves as a clear indication that Uganda contributes significantly to the growth of the industry in the country’’.

Destination Diani

Silky white sands, palm-lined walkways, and mild turquoise waters define this attractive destination. Tourists frequently refer to it as a “silver paradise” since it lies at the point where the huge Indian Ocean and the African continent converge. The area offers visitors access to stunning tropical retreats 30 km south of Mombasa, where there are innumerable beach resorts to satisfy all types of travellers.

Diani is a top bucket-list destination on most travellers’ plans when seeking a tropical paradise to relax. The rolling white sands are perfect for sunbathing, while the crystal-clear waters are perfect for snorkelling and are surrounded by a variety of wildlife to explore. The place is suitable for families, couples, and friends.
