In a trailblazing move, Saudi Arabia is set to unveil its first luxury train, “Dream of the Desert,” as part of a 200 million Saudi riyals ($53.33 million) collaboration with Italian hospitality company Arsenale Group. This marks a significant stride for the Middle Eastern kingdom as it delves into the burgeoning world of luxury train travel, catering to the increasing demand for high-end rail experiences globally.

The announcement comes on the heels of Saudi Arabia’s strategic efforts to boost its tourism sector, having opened its doors to international tourists in 2019. The kingdom has been actively investing in high-profile tourism projects, including a $500 billion model city located in the northwest Saudi Arabian desert. Now, the introduction of “Dream of the Desert” signals a captivating addition to the country’s tourism portfolio, embracing the slow travel movement with a touch of opulence.

The luxury train is poised to embark on its maiden journey from the capital city of Riyadh to Qurayyat, near the northern border with Jordan, covering a breathtaking 1,300-kilometer route across Saudi Arabia’s picturesque desert landscapes, including the city of Hail. With a design inspired by Saudi style and tradition, the “fully customized” train boasts 40 luxury cabins, each crafted to provide a blend of comfort and cultural immersion. Reservations for one or two-night trips, accommodating a maximum of 82 passengers, are set to open later this year.

Paolo Barletta, CEO of Arsenale, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The initial production phases of the Dream of the Desert carriages in Italy have recently commenced, and we can’t wait for the debut of our first train in the kingdom in the coming years.”

Saudi Arabia’s venture into the luxury train market aligns with the global trend of increased interest in high-speed trains and luxury rail cruises. Many countries are investing substantial amounts in rail infrastructure to provide sustainable alternatives to short-haul travel and alleviate traffic congestion. Notably, US President Joe Biden has pledged $30 billion for rail projects, while France plans to invest around €100 billion ($106 billion) in train travel by 2040.

“Dream of the Desert” follows the success of Saudi Arabia’s Haramain High-Speed Railway, connecting the holy cities of Mecca and Medina with King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah in 2018. The upcoming luxury train promises a unique and environmentally conscious mode of transportation, aligning with the global push towards greener travel options.

This ambitious endeavor is set to position Saudi Arabia as a premier destination for discerning travelers seeking a harmonious blend of luxury, culture, and breathtaking landscapes. As the world eagerly anticipates the launch of “Dream of the Desert” in late 2025, it signals a new era for Saudi Arabian tourism and an exciting chapter for the future of luxury train travel.
