Egyptair has received its first Airbus A321neo, delivered by aircraft lessor Aercap. The flight, operated as MS3211, took off from Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport (XFW) at 12:05 on February 27 and landed at Cairo International Airport (CAI) at 17:09. This is the first delivery of the type for the Egyptian airline, which has ordered seven of them.

Egyptair is the first operator in Africa to get the aircraft, which has 16 business class seats and 166 economy seats. The airline intends to use its new planes on flights throughout Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.

To boost decarbonization in aviation, the flight from Germany to Egypt used a blend of 34% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This isn’t the first time Egyptair has used SAF, as Simple Flying highlighted last year when MS800 flew from Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) to Sharm el-Sheikh (SSH).

Airbus aircraft can now operate with up to 50% SAF, a blend of feedstocks including spent fat, oil, and grease. CO2 emissions from aviation gasoline are 80% lower than those from conventional fossil fuels. Airbus has conducted 100% SAF flights in testing settings. It does, however, intend for mainline operators to use up to 100% SAF by the end of the decade.

Egyptair has joined the roster of Airbus A321neo operators worldwide; Air New Zealand recently acquired its third A321neo, which will be used for domestic flights between Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Queenstown. The Air New Zealand A321neo has 217 seats and is configured as a one-class aircraft.

Most deliveries from Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport (XFW) to Auckland International Airport (AKL) have followed a Hamburg (XFW) – Muscat (MCT) – Kuala Lumpur (KUL) – Cairns (CNS) – Auckland (AKL) routing, with crew breaks and overnights at each port.

Hawaiian Airlines (HA) proposes to use the A321neo on a new route between Honolulu Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) and Rarotonga International Airport (RAR) in the Cook Islands commencing May 20. Tickets are already on sale, with a schedule as follows:

On Saturdays, HA495 will depart from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu at 16:00 and arrive in Rarotonga International Airport (RAR) at 22:25.

HA496 will depart Rarotonga International Airport (RAR) at 23:35 on Sundays and arrive at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu at 05:50 on Mondays.
