Ethiopian Airlines is in talks to start nonstop flights to Malta, as well as flights to cities in the United States.

Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela welcomed Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali in Valletta, Malta’s capital, where the two discussed ways to strengthen bilateral collaboration, particularly in aviation.

Abela stated that Ethiopian Airlines intends to start flights between its Addis Ababa (ADD) hub and Malta (MLA), as well as flights from Malta to destinations in the United States. He emphasized that the envisaged network extension will boost international investment in Malta.

Ethiopian Airlines now runs six routes to North America: five to the United States and one to Canada. Because to Addis Ababa’s high elevation of 2,334 m (7,625 ft) above sea level, all of the carrier’s outbound services must stop en way to refuel.

According to OAG Schedules Analyzer data for the week beginning February 6, daily service from ADD to Washington Dulles (IAD) operates through Dublin (DUB), along with 5X-weekly services to Chicago O’Hare.

Ethiopian Airlines also serves Newark Liberty (EWR), Washington Dulles, and New York John F. Kennedy (JFK) three times per week via Togo’s capital Lomé (LFW).

In May 2015, the flag carrier began flying via Dublin, and in July 2016, it began flying via Lomé. Before, it supplied the North American market through Rome Fiumicino (FCO).

Between May 2018 and June 2019, the Star Alliance member additionally flew to Newark from Abidjan (ABJ) in the Ivory Coast before connecting to New York JFK. The latter Addis Ababa-Abidjan-New York JFK route was in operation until the epidemic began in March 2020 and has yet to reopen.

Malta, located in the middle Mediterranean around 80 kilometres (50 miles) from southern Italy, currently lacks a scheduled nonstop connection to the United States. There has been no nonstop service for the past two decades, with the exception of Lufthansa’s Malta-Newark service during the summer 2021 season, which caters primarily to customers boarding Viking Cruises from Valletta.

Ethiopian’s projected Malta expansion comes after the airline reported “fruitful” talks with Denver delegates about operating a new service to the state capital. Denver (DEN), like other airports in the United States save JFK, is a hub for fellow Star Alliance member United Airlines.

“Denver is another potential market in the United States for our airline,” Ethiopian CEO Mesfin Tasew stated. “After making all of the necessary planning and preparations, we would be delighted to add the city to our worldwide network in the near future.”
