Emirates Airline set to scrap off 9,000 Jobs, Says Sir Tim Clark

Emirates airline may cut up to 15% of its workforce in wake of coronavirus pandemic

Emirates airline is set to lay off up to 9,000 staff because of the ongoing impact the coronavirus crisis is having on world travel demand, the airline’s president has said.

Sir Tim Clark said in an interview with that, the airline has already let a tenth of its workforce go but added: “We will probably have to let go of a few more, probably up to 15%.”

Emirates began making staff cuts a couple of months ago before pausing temporarily. But staff, including 700 pilots, began receiving notices again last week and Emirates confirmed that it was making further workforce reductions.

The world’s largest long-haul carrier had 60,000 staff prior to the Covid-19 crisis and has so far let go of around 1,200 pilots and thousands more cabin crew.

Sir Tim said that Emirates had been heading for “one of our best years ever” before the pandemic but maintained that since the crisis began, Emirates was “not as badly off as others”.

Dubai’s government earlier this year promised an equity injection for the state-owned carrier but Emirates has still had to reduce its fixed costs in order to preserve cash.

While some short-haul and domestic travel demand is returning, long-haul demand, which Emirates relies on, is expected to take longer to recover.

Airlines around the world are set to make a net loss of $84.3 billion this year, according to the latest forecast by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
