01. Uganda Airlines to commence maiden commercial flight of her A330neo Airbus

Following the successful certification with the AirOperations Certificate (AOC) by the Civil Aviation Authority, the airlines is high on it’s heels to operate her first commercial flight with the Airbus Neo A330-800s.

The 2 Airbus A330-800s with registration 5X-NIL (msn 1977) and 5X-CRN (msn 1979) arrived in Uganda  in December 2020 and January 2021, respectively. However, due to delays in their type certification, both were grounded until August 12 and just before being certified, 5X-NIL carried out a demonstration flight to Johannesburg O.R. Tambo in South Africa.

02. Quarantine on arrival, sudden lockdowns add to business travellers’ woes

Business travellers are raising concerns about the reliance on screen-based interaction as their primary meeting method.

Now more than ever, they are also looking for control, ease and simplicity, according to a recent survey of 738 business travelers worldwide by leading travel management company BCD Travel.

While virtual meetings and remote work are here to stay, business travel and face-to-face meetings remain extremely important. Seventy-six percent of survey respondents said business travel helps them perform their work efficiently. In a post-pandemic travel environment, 60% prefer to return to pre-pandemic levels of business travel, while 26% prefer to travel less and 9% to travel more.

03. Venice set to start charging tourists for entry

According to the Italian newspaper La Stampa, Venice plans to charge visitors for admission and set quotas beginning in the summer of 2022.

05. Fred. Olsen ship marks return of international cruising in UK

New ship Borealis set sail for the rugged landscapes of Iceland on 14th August with around 800 guests on board.

It was the first international voyage to set sail from British waters since all UK cruise operators paused their operations in March last year.

The cruise called into Reykjavík, Ísafjörður, Eyjafjörður and Seyðisfjörður, and guests were able to leave the ship and explore ashore in organised shore excursions.

07. Booking.com releases series of powerful stories by famous personalities in Explorers Campaign

Booking.com has announced the inaugural launch of the Booking Explorers campaign, unveiling a series of powerful stories by leading personalities in Asia Pacific to re-ignite travel inspiration once more.

Travel remains fundamental to people’s lives – to explore and experience our world  is an innate human need. With travel now under strong consideration and vaccination programmes slowly gaining momentum in Asia, the campaign is a celebration of the trailblazers and explorers amongst us, showcasing how they have remained explorers at heart and continue to responsibly experience the best our world (or their backyards) has to offer, despite challenges brought about by the pandemic.

The campaign showcases Amazing Race Australia winners, Tim and Rod, who have travelled the world. Before the pandemic, Indian multiple Grand Slam Champion, Sania Mirza, was a global citizen that pursued  a successful professional career in tennis. Korean alternative pop band, Leenalchi, connected people through the power of their music, traveling the world to find inspiration for new songs and interacting with global fans.

09. South African Airways to restart operations after one-year respite

South Africa’s state-owned national carrier South African Airways (SAA) will resume flying between limited destinations from 23 September, a year after it halted operations as it failed to pay its debt.

Last month the government had said that it was selling a 51% stake in the carrier to Takatso consortium, which had committed more than USD 200 million to bring the airline back from the brink and restart operations.

SAA is one of a number of South Africa’s debt-laden state enterprises that have regularly depended on government bailouts. It entered a form of bankruptcy protection in December 2019, but its condition worsened as the COVID-19 pandemic restricted air travel and hurt its minimal cash flows further.
