Entebbe International Airport, Uganda’s primary gateway to the world, has once again made headlines with its impressive traveler statistics for January 2024. With a total of 196,211 international passengers passing through its terminals, the airport has demonstrated remarkable resilience and growth in the face of global challenges especially after the Covid pandemic.
Breaking down the numbers, the airport welcomed 99,216 arriving passengers and bid farewell to 96,995 departing passengers. This influx translates to an average of 6,329 passengers per day, marking the second-highest figure ever recorded in a single month, narrowly trailing behind the December 2023 record of 6,418 passengers per day.
One of the key contributors to this surge in passenger traffic is Uganda’s hosting of the NAM (Non-Aligned Movement) & G77+ China summits in January 2024. The airport played a pivotal role in facilitating the arrival and departure of a total of 1,918 delegates to these prestigious summits, underscoring its importance as a logistical hub for major international events.
But it’s not just passengers that are keeping Entebbe International Airport bustling; the cargo sector is also experiencing significant activity. In January 2024, the airport handled 1,579 metric tonnes of imports and 3,604 metric tonnes of exports, totaling an impressive 5,183 metric tonnes of cargo.
These remarkable figures underscore Entebbe International Airport’s pivotal role as a vital link in Uganda’s connectivity to the global economy. The airport’s ability to efficiently handle both passenger and cargo traffic is a testament to its world-class facilities, dedicated staff, and strategic location.
The surge in international passenger traffic, fueled in part by the successful hosting of major summits, underscores Uganda’s growing appeal as a destination of choice. This influx of visitors not only brings economic benefits through increased spending on tourism-related services but also elevates Uganda’s global profile as a favorable destination for business, conferences, and leisure travel.
Moreover, it highlights the importance of continued investment in airport infrastructure and tourism promotion efforts to sustain this momentum and unlock the full potential of Uganda’s rich cultural heritage, natural wonders, and hospitality industry.
