The approved cities include towns of Arua, Gulu, Jinja, Fort Portal, and Mbarara, which will be elevated from municipal to city status by that date. The towns of Hoima and Mbale will later on become cities in July 2021.

The minister of Local Government, Mr.Tom Butime, noted that during a previous Cabinet meeting chaired by President Yoweri Museveni in Entebbe, it was resolved that the municipalities would be elevated in a number of phases.

At the meeting, the President commented that a budget of Sh130 billion would be set aside for the creation and emphasization of the cities after all requirements are met.

Fort Portal, Mbarara and Hoima will be regional cities in western Uganda; Entebbe in the central region; Lira, Arua and Gulu in the northern region, and Mbale and Jinja cities in the eastern region.

The move to upgrade the towns into cities is part of a government plan to turn nine municipalities into regional cities so as to bring services closer to the people.

It should be noted that it has been long awaited to approve these towns into cities as it has been a daily cry by legislators as an option to lessen on the congestion around Kampala city which has been seen as an over populated town due to the pivoted services in this area.
