This was revealed by Doreen Katusiime, the permanent secretary in the ministry of tourism, wild life and antiquities during a press conference where the ministry outlined the progress made in implementing government’s 2016-2021 manifesto as part of the manifesto week activities.

“When it comes to internet without a doubt, it is one of the infrastructure that supports tourism.” Mrs. Doreen remarked.

She commented on the matter while responding to a question raised regarding the poor internet connection in many of Uganda’s national parks which often limits tourists from sharing their experience in real time over the internet.

In a period where there is exponential uptake in the use of internet and where the internet particularly social media platforms have become ideal marketing tools for travel destinations, accessibility of fast and reliable internet plays an essential part in communication and marketing.

This generally is because a number of travelers would wish to instantaneously share photos, videos and stories of their encounters to their online audiences. It is important to note also that a revealer’s experience in particular place not only influences him/her decision to return but also other people within their groupings.

Mrs. Doreen stated that, “You have international tourists visiting, and once they have finished, what they are doing, they want to get on their laptops and send pictures back home or do some work. With a reliable internet connectivity, this would be deemed easy.”

Asked about the timeline for the project, James Saaka, the Executive Director of NITA-U  said that funding is expected in the coming 2019/2020 financial year though he did not disclose the required amount.
