Having showcased their best catwalks and enticing fashion designs, Oliver Nakakande still emerged out of the 21 other contestants as the winner of Miss Uganda 2019/2020 grand finale that took place at the Kampala Sheraton hotel over the weekend.
The beauty queen could not believe it upon being announced Miss Uganda 2019.
The soft spoken Nakakande who hails from Bombo is a student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. Elizabeth Bagaya emerged as the first runner up while Mariam Nyamate ranked the second runner up.
As the 22 contestants took to the runway, something was noticed. Most of these contestants carried along a team of moral boosters to the venue with many of these having placards of the contestants’ images and names.
During the elimination rounds, Nakakande was quizzed on what she would do if she met the worlds’ heads of states and she said she would immensely advocated for a change in the employment patterns as the high level of unemployment has seen many youth of her age fall low of their perceived dreams. Though the elimination stage, 12 out of the 22 contestants were dropped leaving 10 contestants to battle for the crown and these were later zeroed down to the winner.
Nakakande took over the crown from Quinn Abenakyo who was Miss Uganda 2018/19 and also represented Uganda in Miss World beauty pageant in Sanya, China, where she emerged 2nd runner up and also crowned Miss World Africa.
″To the new beauty queen, I wish you good luck. Remember that we have a lot of tasks to complete and together, I believe we can change this World and make it a better place for the girl child,” Abenakyo remarked.
However, coincidence took over the night as the number ‘22’ seemed to be the lucky miss Uganda number. Just like Quinn Abenakyo last year, Nakakande’s number was 22 too. Woow!
Reigning Miss World, Vanessa Ponce De Leon, who was in attendance thanked Brenda Nanyonjo, the Miss Uganda Foundation CEO for instilling the principles of beauty with a purpose in the girls. Ponce promised to return to Uganda where she said she fell in love with matooke.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga who graced the event as the chief guest, thanked the organisers of the pageant for instilling confidence and knowledge in the girls. She also urged the contestants to continue with what they have learnt regardless of who emerges the winner.
“I also want to thank Mike Mukula for supporting this pageant to be a success. Thank you all for inviting me to this occasion. I am enjoying myself,” Kadaga commented.
The other winners of the night included Santina Sasha who emerged as Miss Pulse (Formerly Known as Miss Popularity) and she was awarded a dummy cheque worth 2 million UGX from the CEO Wim Vanhellepuette.
also drove away (as it has been the norm) in her brand new Red Toyota Wish branded Miss Uganda.
