Rwandan Cup winners Police FC will begin their Caf Confederation Cup campaign against South Sudanese side Atlabara on Saturday at Kigali Regional Stadium in Nyamirambo.

The law enforcers, who face their first test without captain and talisman Jacques Tuyisenge who joined Gor Mahia last month, will be looking to better their debut appearance in the continental competition.

In 2013, LLB Academie of Burundi eliminated Police at the first hurdle 2-1 on aggregate, but head coach Andre Cassa Mbungo is determined to proceed to the next round.

Mbungo was hired by Police for his exploits in the 2014 edition of the competition when he inspired AS Kigali to the second round after seeing off Burundian side Academie Tchite 2-1 in the preliminary round and Al Ahly Shendi of Sudan 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw on aggregate.

“Our target is to make it to the next round so we shall give our best in this game. It will not be easy because Atlabara is a very physical side but we shall give the game 100 per cent,” said the optimistic Mbungo.

It is his experience that the law enforcers believe will come in handy on Saturday, however, he faces a tough challenge against Ugandan tactician Leo Adraa.

Adraa, who coached the same side at the 2014 Cecafa Kagame Cup taking them to the quarterfinals at the same venue, is keen to put in a performance that will better their debut two years when they were eliminated by DR Congo’s Etancheite 1-1 on away goals rule.

“When we came here the first time in Cecafa, we went to the second round so now we want to make it to the next round in the Caf Confederation Cup,” emphasised Adraa.

“Our players are motivated with the pitch which has just hosted Chan because in Juba, it is the opposite. They play on a dry field because of the climate so with a good field, I think we shall be able to match the hosts.”

“Because this is an away match, the best way is to play attacking football with consciousness which means when you lose the ball, you should defend a lot to avoid conceding goals.”

The winner of this tie will face the winner between Sagrada Esperanca of Angola and South Africa’s Ajax Cape Town.
