Two years back, a team led by the then Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Prof Ephraim Kamuntu, attended a ground-breaking ceremony to commence the construction of the hotel at the institute. The team included government officials and other partners. However, the construction of the grand hotel was supposed to be completed within 12 months.

UHTTI is the only Ugandan government institution that deals in hotel and hospitality. The construction of a three star hotel was deemed necessary by government as an avenue to improve the quality of infrastructure with in the tourism industry.

The grand cost of the project is about Shs382 billion for the five components including land administration and management reform, business registration and licensing reform, tourism competitive development, match grant facility and project implementation.

The project is co-funded by the World Bank to the tune of $100m (Shs373b) and government $2.5m (Shs9b).

Commenting about the projects progress, the CEDP project coordinator, Dr John-Marie Kyewalabye, said: “Works currently stand at 80 per cent and so far everything is on track. The fittings are already being installed while the furnishings were imported and are already in the country.”

Once the facility is all complete, it is hoped to be a home away from home for both tourists and  staff at the institute. The hotel will serve all the Ugandan local foods.
