The Madhvani Foundation awards record number of scholarships for the 2016/2017 academic year

Kampala, 25th July 2016 – Following a thorough selection process, the Madhvani Foundation through its scholarships Sub-Committee has awarded a record 172 University scholarships worth 711,000,000 million UGX to gifted but financially challenged students for the year 2016/2017 academic year. It is the 14th consecutive year the Foundation has given out scholarships since the reinstatement of the programme in 2003.

The Foundation received over 1,100 applications from all regions of the country of which 338 were shortlisted for final face to face interviews. The final list of students chosen represent the most promising and deserving students we were able to find” explained Hon. Gabriel Opio the Chairman of the Scholarship Sub – committee. “We are confident they will complete their studies and go on to lay a valuable role in the development of the country”.

Speaking about the geographical and demographical distribution of the scholarship recipients, Mr. Opio revealed that the Eastern region dominated the number of scholarships awarded with 33% of the total while the central region came second with 27 %. Of the professional courses, Engineering and Commerce disciplines were awarded the largest percentage with 43% and 37% followed by Medicine 27% and Agriculture 21% respectively “This is in line with the vision of the founder of the Madhvani Group who believed that the secret to Uganda’s development lay in the education of its people in science and technical courses” explained Hon. Gerald Ssendaula the Foundation Chairman.

Congratulating the winning applicants and informing successful candidates where to pick up their letters of award, Hon. Anthony Butele, a member of the board and scholarships committee advised all successful candidates to come with proper proof of identification at the Madhvani Foundation Offices, Plot N0.96 -98, Business Park, 5th street, Industrial Area from 31st August 2016.

Mr. Ssendaula encouraged gifted but financially challenged students to apply for scholarships in the 2017-2018 academic year on the Foundation website www.madhvanifoundation.com when the application window opens at the end of March 2017.
