In a statement issued on the 30th of March, the company announced its temporary shutdown. This was after the president had announced some additional measures meant to restrain the spread of Covid-19. The statement released to Uber customers by email read in part as below;

“As announced by president Museveni on March 30th 2020, there will be a restriction of all movement within Uganda for a period of 14days. Based on this directive, Uber will temporarily cease operations of UberX and UberBODA for the period of lockdown, subject to any further government announcements.”

The decision by the company took effect on the 31st of March. This means there will be no advance operations of Uber with in Uganda until the ban is called off.

The public continue to be advised to stay home and avoid unnecessary movements so as to restrict the spread of the disease from person-to-person. The ministry of health suggests regular washing and cleansing of ones hands accompanied by observation of other set precautions.
