UBL, Buganda Kingdom Step Up for Sanitation in Kampala suburbs

Uganda Breweries and the Kabaka Foundation recently commissioned the Namuwongo sanitation block, which is one of the eight blocks that have been constructed in Katwe, Mulago, Mengo, Nakulabye, Kireka, Nateete, Lubiri, and Namuwongo over the past two years. These sanitation blocks will give residents of these respective communities easy access to clean water and sanitation services.

Uganda has witnessed economic growth over the past 20 years, which has caused significant population shifts from rural to informal settlements near urban centres. Urban regions’ water and sanitation systems are under pressure due to the population growth. A reliable source of water is not accessible to 38 million of the country’s 45 million residents, or nearly 83% of the total population.

Uganda Breweries Corporate Relations Director Juliana Kagwa emphasised the brewery’s commitment to enhancing access to water, sanitation, and hygiene in various communities throughout Uganda that struggle to obtain clean and safe water or toilets and bathrooms during her remarks at the commissioning of the Namuwongo sanitation block.

“Because we are a part of society, the brewery intentionally seeks out methods to have an impact in communities. This gives us hope that the development of these dependable water supply infrastructure in these locations will significantly contribute to easing access to clean and safe water, ensuring healthier communities. said Kagwa.

The 8 sanitation blocks include a section with urinals, 2 male toilets, 1 bathroom, 1 handicapped person-accessible toilet with a male seat, 2 female toilets, 1 bathroom and 1 disabled person-accessible toilet with a female seat. 15,200 beneficiaries will be served overall, with an average population of 1,900 persons each block. The community will have constant access to the sanitary blocks, which have running water in the restrooms, handwashing stations, and toilets.

The chief guest, Owek. Robert Wagwa Nsibirwa, commended UBL for its ongoing assistance in raising sanitary standards in many locations surrounding Kampala’s suburbs and beyond. He is the Buganda Kingdom’s second deputy prime minister and minister of finance.

“Clean, safe water sources that are easily accessible are essential, since their absence puts the health of the residents in those particular places at serious risk. Therefore, these kinds of actions will aid in preventing those health risks in our neighbourhoods. Now that you have these facilities, let it be everyone’s obligation to look after them, keep them clean, and most importantly, sustainably manage the project after it has been handed off, so they can serve us for many years to come.

“I also want to express my gratitude to the regional administrators who have collaborated with their local populations to support the project implementers. Your devotion to and love for your community and the people is what has made this possible,” Nsibirwa added.
