The British High Commission is holding events to commemorate several days of reflection, celebration, and community engagement from May 4 through May 15. Events include “The Big Help Out,” which will highlight the work done by Ugandan organizations supporting local communities, and the Coronation “Big Lunch,” which will honor the contribution of UK-linked charities and social enterprises in Uganda. Both of these will be visited by and involve members of the British High Commission. On May 11, a reception at the residence of the British High Commissioner welcomed friends from all around Uganda, as well as partners from the Ugandan government, civic society, the diplomatic community, British businesses and friends from across Uganda to celebrate the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla, with British food and drink and a performance from Brass for Africa – a UK-founded but African-led charity that improves young people’s lives through music.

Representatives from 18 UK-affiliated organizations operating in Uganda and reflecting the Coronation’s themes of sustainability, youth, community, and diversity attended the ‘Big Lunch’ on May 4 at the High Commissioner’s house. The “Big Lunch” gave organizations a chance to network, learn about one another’s work, and explain how much they are doing to protect Uganda’s wildlife, advance rural education, and empower female entrepreneurs. Over the past 40 years, His Majesty the King has personally founded more than 20 charities, such as The Prince’s Trust, The Prince’s Foundation, and The Prince of Wales’ Charitable Fund (PWCF). The Prince’s Trust International has been operating since 2015 and conducts programmes in more than 20 Commonwealth nations, including Uganda.

Guests had the chance to witness elements of the Coronation at the Coronation Reception on May 11. The Coronation took place on May 6 in Westminster Abbey, where British monarchs have been crowned since 1066. In keeping with the King’s promise to serve the country and Commonwealth, the Coronation ceremony incorporated traditional rites with more contemporary and individual accents. The nation came together for this momentous occasion—the first coronation in 70 years—with festivities and events held throughout the UK, the Commonwealth, and 280 diplomatic embassies throughout the world. Nearly 40 members of the armed forces from at least 35 Commonwealth nations, including Uganda, and more than 6,000 members of the UK’s armed forces marched in procession on London’s Mall.

Speaking at the reception on May 11, H.E. Kate Airey OBE, the British High Commissioner to Uganda, said that the Coronation was a historic and intensely personal occasion that reflected His Majesty’s resolve “not to be served but to serve.” She added that it served as proof “that one may cling on to old and profound customs and love them. Recognise, however, that these same traditions are flexible and adaptable, and that this does not cause them to fail; rather, it makes them more resilient, inclusive, and cherished by all generations.
