There were 77 founding members of the organization thus the name G77. However, by November 2019, the organization had since expanded to 135 member countries including China. Although the members of the G-77 have increased to 135 countries, the original name was retained due to its historic significance.

Currently, the G77 at the UN is a coalition of 135 developing countries, designed to promote its members’ collective economic interests and create an enhanced joint negotiating capacity in the United Nations.

The Group of 77 is the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries in the United Nations, which provides the means for the countries of the south to articulate and promote their collective economic interests and enhance their joint negotiating capacity on all major international economic issues within the United Nations system, and promote South-South cooperation for development.

The G77 was founded on 15 June 1964, by the Joint Declaration of the Seventy-Seven Countries issued at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the first major meeting was in Algiers in 1967.

Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Amb. Adonia Ayebare is the current External Adviser on G77 matters.

Uganda will be the third country to the host the G77 conference to be held this year near Lake Victoria at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
