UK Government commissions new building at Peas Onwards and Upwards School

The UK government and Promoting Equality in African Schools (PEAS) has commissioned a three-storeyed building at PEAS Onwards and Upwards secondary school in Buloba.

It is the first-storeyed structure in the PEAS networks in Zambia and Uganda. During her visit to Uganda in January, UK Minister Vicky Ford officially broke ground for the building. The building has six classrooms, office space, and one science lab, adding to the available learning areas. In the PEAS Network, the science lab will improve the teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses, dispelling the myth that underprivileged students can’t succeed in STEM fields. The dorm rooms will address obstacles that boys and girls in less privileged neighbourhoods experience when trying to enrol in secondary school and move on to post-secondary education.

The UK has contributed money over the past seven years to help PEAS increase access to secondary education that is both inexpensive and of high quality. In Uganda, the PEAS network now includes 30 secondary schools that serve over 14,000 students across 24 districts. Additionally, PEAS offers direct assistance to 200 Government-run schools, assisting them in raising the standard of education and bolstering the educational system as a whole.

The British High Commission in Kampala’s Deputy Development Director, Matthew Little, commented on this by stating: “The UK is committed to enabling more children in Uganda to receive a quality education. It provides a path to greater alternatives and freedom in later life for the individual, as well as greater progress and prosperity for Uganda. We are delighted that our relationship with PEAS is providing opportunities to thousands of youngsters who might otherwise be left out since these advantages should be open to everyone’’

PEAS is a non-profit organisation that manages schools in underserved areas where there are few or no affordable secondary schools. Due to the significant fee increases experienced by many secondary schools in Uganda following COVID-19 and the failure of some to reopen, PEAS has preserved access to secondary education for students who would have otherwise dropped out of school due to the increased fees; the number of students enrolled in PEAS schools is now higher than it was prior to COVID-19.

“This relationship has produced 1,020 new learning spaces, 2 scientific laboratories, and 660 boarding spaces in eight PEAS schools across the PEAS Network in Uganda,” Henry Senkasi, Country Director of PEAS, noted. We are incredibly grateful to the UK for its dedication, long-standing relationship, and investment in Ugandan students’ lives and indirectly in their future by ensuring that they realise their full potential as future contributors to society.

In this round of infrastructure support, the UK is supporting the following schools: Onwards & Upwards in Wakiso; PEAS Kityerera in Mayuge; PEAS Kichwamba and PEAS Kazingo in Kabarole; PEAS Kuc Kigen in Lamwo; PEAS Toroma in Katakwi; PEAS Mukongoro and PEAS Nyero in Kumi.

The launch brings together district education partners, local government, community representation/ parents and PEAS student representation.
