United Sates of America, Ambassador to Uganda Her Excellency Deborah Marlac and American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) yesterday joined the rest of the world to mark World Environment day at Plastic Recycling Industries (PRI) nakawa.
The UN is calling on people across the globe to help “Beat Plastic Pollution.” a theme that is very relevant to Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA)
She lauded Coca cola and PRI for the initiative that has seen many Ugandan youth and women of upto 1,580 get employed wether directly or indirectly, from plastic collectors to collection units and finally those employed at the factory who earn a living to sustain their families.
Public affairs and communications manager for Coca Cola Beverages, Maureen Kyomuhendo commented that ‘’As Coco-cola beverages Africa and PRI are very proud for this initiative that has seen us give thousands of Ugandans jobs well as protecting the environment, we are the only company that packs in plastics and recycles the same plastics to make sure our environments are not destroyed.
Earlier in January this year, the company started out a global initiative to fundamentally reshape its approach to packaging through its world without waste initiative which aims to collect and recycle the equivalent of 100% of its packaging by 2030.
The US Ambassador applauded PRI on environmental stewardship exhibited and the clear tracking of their targets monthly. “Being able to collect 34% of the plastic you produce as CCBA is a step in the right direction”. She lauded the partnership route and agreed that the plastic problem requires collective effort. “ I would like to thank Coca-Cola Uganda for what they are doing to make a difference. They are picking plastic from the streets, sewage and water ways. She stressed the importance of pledging our part as individuals, citizens and members of the global community. This will result in a cleaner environment for the good of all, she concluded.
