Veteran tourist Tim Macartney- Snape finalizes week-long mountaineering expedition in Uganda

He hiked up to the Margherita peak, Uganda’s highest point of 5109 meters on mount Stanley.

As part of his activities in the country, veteran tourist Tim Macartney hosted a talk on Wednesday evening on Sustainable Tourism at Golden Tulip Hotel. In attendance were representatives from; the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities’ Tourism Development office,  Uganda Tourism Board led by CEO Lilly Ajarova, Uganda Wildlife Authority led by Tourism Director Stephen Masaba, Association of Uganda Tour Operators led by CEO Gloria Tumwesigye, the media fraternity, Makerere University and Rwenzori Trekking Services led by John Hunwick.




Tim Macartney shared his unforgettable experience with Uganda’s friendly people and the beauty and diversity of Rwenzori National Park and mountains where he made his 64th birthday. He noted with high regard that Rwenzori is by far the most scenic mountain he had ever hiked and applaud the quality of service by Rwenzori Trekking Services and offered to refer fellow mountaineers to Uganda. Tim urged Uganda tourism stakeholders to embrace sustainable tourism in the Ruwenzori’s by investing in nature tourism, building durable walk aways throughout the park and enforcing better waste management.

UTB CEO Lilly Ajarova, who led Tim’s expedition, noted that mountaineering is a key priority earmarked for development. This will be achieved through partnerships with public-private partners to develop infrastructure for the Rwenzoris and other mountains like Kadam, Elgon and Muhavura she added.

Uganda Wildlife Authority Tourism Director Masaba announced that about 6,000 tourists visited Rwenzori National Park in 2019. He congratulated Tim Macartney-Snape for choosing to hike the Rwenzoris and thanked Uganda Tourism Board and Rwenzori Trekking Services for supporting Tim’s expedition in Uganda.

The Association of Uganda Tour Operators CEO Ms. Gloria Tumwesigye also spoke at the engagement, she pointed out that AUTO in partnership with TourCert is leading sustainable tourism by teaching its members to embrace responsible tourism. Association members are being trained to put people (communities) and the planet (their environment) first before profiting from tourism.

AUTO encourages its members to adopt the 3Rs to combat waste management in tourist places. This requires tour operators to Refuse the use of plastics, Reuse and Recycle plastic that they need for their work.

The evening ended on a high note with a birthday cake presented to Tim to celebrate his 64th birthday.
