Kampala, Uganda 13 Feb 2016 -General Elly Tumwine, speaking at the Ekkula Pearl of Africa Tourism Awards which took place at Hotel Africana on Friday, described Uganda’s tourism sector as ‘virgin’ and a ‘goldmine’. He thanked members of the private sector who are already making an effort to make Uganda a preferred tourism destination.
One of the investors spearheading this tourism revolution is Ruparelia Group who through its range of hotels has spurred tourism across the country. One of the hotels under the Ruparelia Group, Speke Resort & Conference Centre Munyonyo, has strongly stood out.
At the Ekkula Pearl of Africa Tourism Awards, Speke Resort, emerged winner of the Best Service/Luxury Standard Hotel in Uganda category. They beat off competition from Sheraton Hotel, Imperial Royale Hotel and Serena Hotel.
Speke Resort & Conference Centre is a 5 star hotel conveniently located 12 km from Uganda’s capital Kampala. The hotel offers the ultimate in luxury accommodation, leisure facilities, the finest conference and business meeting location in East Africa.
Speke Resort Munyonyo was built in 2001 and accommodated the visiting Presidents and Prime Ministers at the 2007 Commonwealth Conference (CHOGM). The Resort has 59 Presidential suites with a unique blend of traditional Ugandan décor and ultramodern furnishings, in addition to cottages, one bedroom and two bedroom apartments or studio rooms. The hotel has a total of 335 rooms.
Greg Petzer, the general manager of Speke Resort, said team work and working hard to meet the needs of their customers make them stand out. He said it was a great honor to be recognized as the hotel with the best services and standards in the whole country.
He said they will continue reviewing their standards to meet the market needs and make Uganda the best tourism destination. He thanked his team for executing the work well resulting into an award.
“We are extremely proud for the recognition. As a team, we work very hard to meet the expectations of our quests. By winning this award, it means we are doing something right,” Petzer said, adding that they are going to work extra even harder and continue being the best.
The Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga, speaking as the guest of honor at the Award giving ceremony, applauded people investing in the tourism sector for creating jobs. He appealed to stakeholders in the sector to bring in more foreign tourists and also promote domestic tourism.
