South Africa’s legendary pop hitmaker Yvonne Chaka Chaka arrived in Uganda yesterday as she warms up for a children’s charity concert this Friday 20th July 2018 at the Kampala Serena Hotel.
The concert is organised by the Shule Foundation and will feature comedian Patrick Salvador Idringi, MP and Musician Bobi Wine.
Proceeds from the show will go towards construction of a School building for former street kids.
The Shule foundation’s co-founder, Jackie Wolfso said that; “There is a real challenge of children ageing out of the classroom, and through our work we want to construct a school that offers both formal and informal education to children whose age is not aligned with their level of education’’.
“If we don’t come with better solutions such as education and economic empowerment for our children, the economy of this country stands to be negatively affected”.
Wolfson said the proposed school would be built in the north-western town of Kigumba and offer training to more than 1,500 former street children.
Bobi Wine also added that it was necessary to create an environment where children could learn in peace.
“Street children are always perceived as delinquents or objects of pity,” he said.
“But what they really need is the right education, environment and primary healthcare so that they can become productive assets to the nation and positive contributors to the economic development of society.”
The singer has been vocal in the past about the Ugandan education system, which he says produces more job seekers than job creators.
Yvone Chaka Chaka is popularly known for songs that rocked Africa in the early 80’s and 90’s which include; Umqombothi, Thank you Mr Dj, Makoti, From me to you, Stimela, Who’s got the power, Motherland, Mama, Caught breaking the law, I’m burning Up, Amazing man among many more that she will be performing live.
