The Rwandan government has given Uganda Airlines permission to start operating direct flights from Entebbe to Kigali, which represents a significant turning point in the airline’s recent history.
The statement was made on March 24 in Kigali, Rwanda, at the eleventh Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) meeting between the two countries, when they explored ways to expand trade and movement between them.
This move would “further improve trade, enhance connectivity, and help to improving people-to-people relations,” according to Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, JeJe Odongo. The news, which is anticipated to have a considerable influence on the economies of both countries, was confirmed by his Rwandan counterpart, Vincent Biruta.
After an almost 20-year hiatus, Uganda Airlines started flying again in August 2019. The airline has since been growing its aircraft and network, and the new service to Kigali is a significant addition. More announcements regarding the beginning of flights are anticipated in due course. The airline is presently working to get the appropriate Foreign Air Operator Licence from the Rwandan Civil Aviation Authority.
Due to the fact that it will be simpler for businesses to carry goods and services across the border, the move is anticipated to increase trade between the two countries. Also, it will increase traveller connectedness, making it simpler for people to visit friends and family, attend conferences and events, and experience the sights and sounds of both countries.
Both countries decided to establish a welcoming climate for the private sector and to move quickly on Northern Corridor Integration Projects that had stalled, such the Standard Gauge Railway, during the three-day JPC. These actions are anticipated to deepen the bilateral economic cooperation and support the expansion of the regional aviation market.
