Ethiopian Airlines’ CEO, Tewolde Gebremariam, said construction work will start later this year in a town nearly 40km away from the capital and the airline’s current home, Addis Ababa.

Gebremariam told the state-run Ethiopian News Agency that: “Bole Airport is not going to accommodate us; we have a beautiful expansion project. The airport looks very beautiful and very large but with the way that we are growing, in about three or four years we are going to be full.”

Ethiopian’s current base, Bole Airport, processes around 19 million passengers each year.

Gebremariam said the new airport expects to eventually process more passengers than Dubai International.

Ethiopian Airlines is one of Africa’s most successful carriers and turned a profit of $260 million in its last financial year. It currently has 116 aircraft in its fleet, including Boeing Dreamliners.
