The interviews that took place on Friday 12th May at Huawei offices at Rwenzori towers consisted of 20 who were shortlisted from 35 students who applied to take part in this program from the various public universities of Uganda such as: Makerere, Muni, Lira, Gulu, Busitema, Kyambogo, and Mbarara among others.

The Seeds for the Future program is an initiative started globally by Huawei in 2008 and in Uganda in 2015 during the President’s Official visit to China. This program aims at developing young ICT talents all over the world through technological training and hands-on skills transfer at Huawei Headquarters in Shenzhen China.

The students submitted proposals on how ICT usage can enhance Uganda’s development in thematic areas of commerce, education, agriculture, transport and health among others.

These were interviewed by a panel of five judges from Ministry of Education & Sports, NITA and Huawei, on the basis of how their proposed ICT solutions would solve various economic challenges and how usable, how feasible, how sustainable are these to Uganda,” says Mr. Patrick Muinda, the Assistant Commissioner Information and Communication of the Ministry of Education and Sports who was also part of the five panelists who interviewed students.

Mr. Patrick Muinda also noted in the previous launch ceremony of the 2017 Seeds for the Future program at Makerere on 24th April 2017 that, “The Ministry of Education and Sports is a partner of the Seeds for the future program 2017. This program was introduced to the Minister Hon. Janet Museveni earlier this year, which she welcomed and approved all the said activities and timelines to take place. On this note I thank Huawei for allowing us to be a part and parcel of an initiative that can only add to Uganda’s education sector through knowledge transfer, enhancement of teaching and scientific research capabilities and provision of high quality courses and opportunities for hands-on practice”.

The 10 students shall be announced at the end of May and flagged off to China for the two weeks training in Beijing and our headquarters at Shenzhen”, says Patrick Tong, Huawei’s Public Relations Director.
