Nestled within Uganda’s borders are 1,100 diverse bird species, many of which are unique to the region. Despite this avian richness, bird-watching tourism has taken a back seat to other attractions. The ongoing conference aims to shine a spotlight on Uganda’s unique ecosystem and strategic location, positioning the country as an ideal destination for birding enthusiasts.

Uganda has 1,1000 bird species which is about 11% of the world’s total bird population and 55% of Africa’s.

Speaking ahead of the three-day International Conference for Women Birders, Herbert Byaruhanga, the Bird Uganda Safaris team leader, said that the bird watching product is one of the fasting growing outdoor activities globally, noting that Uganda was well placed to become a top earner from bird watching.

”Africa has over 50 percent of the world’s birds’ species. Uganda is currently well positioned among the top 10 birding destinations globally. In Africa we are among the top five,” he said, highlighting that the increasing number of women in tourism, presents an opportunity to transform societies.

Beyond tourism, the ongoing conference places a strong emphasis on the conservation of Uganda’s avian treasures. With numerous species facing threats, including 24 of the 27 Albertine rift endemics, the conference is a platform to discuss and strategize conservation efforts.

Judith Mirembe, the representative of Uganda women birders on the board of the International Women Birders’ Association, views bird watching not just as a leisure activity but as an effective tool for environmental conservation and a lucrative venture.

Statistics from the ongoing event indicate that birders spend an average of USD 340 to 400 daily during their 14 to 21-day stays, underlining the immense economic potential.

The ongoing event is a dynamic platform for sharing knowledge, fostering global partnerships, and collectively shaping the future of avitourism in Uganda. With feathers in flight and enthusiasm soaring, Uganda is making history in the world of birding tourism.
