Uganda remains one of the top 10 alcohol consuming countries

Uganda has continued to be a top per capita alcohol consuming nation even after numerous interventions by government to lower the high consumption rates.

The high consumption rate is attributed to the exceedingly high youthful population with many being unemployment coupled with a great alcohol consumption history among Ugandan cultures. Alcohol, especially local brew is of great significance among different African cultures and societies and remains one of the top go-to beverages for any social event. People tend to view the substance with particular importance. 

More so, Uganda is naturally endowed nation with plenty of raw materials needed for alcohol distillation and production. This has seen different alcoholic products hit the markets massively and making them a quick run to delicacies for the populace.

This has un deniyingly gotten Uganda as the leading per capita alcohol consumption nation in Africa and the nineth in the world.

9 out of 10 countries with the highest per capita consumption of alcohol are in Europe. Uganda is the only non-European country that counts itself among the leaders of per capita alcohol consumption.

Malwa, which is brewed out of millet and maize, is a classic drink that has been appreciated in the Northern rural areas. Bushera, made of sorghum, is another traditional local drink and is popular in Western Uganda and the capital city of Kampala. Banana-based drinks, such as tonto, and mwenge bigere (banana beer), commonly tagged as ‘Kombuchas’ are solid staples on many drink menus.
