More than 10 million school going children have not attended school in Uganda since March 2020 when schools were locked up due to the COVID-19 pandemic that had swept the world.

Well as the re opening should be a welcome sign and sigh of relief, educators say that the closing has taken a lasting toll, eroding decades of classroom gains.

Despite earlier efforts and shorts at remote education, a less percentage of the entire students could access and effectively take up the initiative given logistical and other challenges such as infrastructure.

More than half of Uganda’s students effectively stopped learning after the government ordered classrooms closed in March 2020, a government agency has found.

Regardless of the re-opening, the long lockdown casts a great deal of challenges that experts anticipate will take a great toll on the education system for years to come.

Many students returning to school are believed to have had no help during the lockdown. Most public schools, which serve the vast majority of children in Uganda, were unable to offer virtual schooling.

Students who took up manual jobs to support their families through the pandemic and may not return to education. Other students worry they may never catch up on the school work they have missed.

Between March 2020 and June last year, the country reported a 22.5-percent jump in pregnancies among girls aged 10 to 24, data from UNICEF show. Many of these pregnancies were in teen girls who might never get chance to visit a classroom in future given the early responsibilities at bay for them to shoulder.

With their careers on hold, many teachers have also switched to other jobs to help provide for their families.
