Ugandan Wildlife Conservationists celebrate 2nd World Chimpanzee Day

Ugandan conservation groups on the 14th of July joined the rest of the world to celebrate the World Chimpanzee day. The Chimpanzee day was introduced by Dr. Jane Goodall last year 2018, as a way to emphasize the need to conserve these closest human cousins.

Speaking at the event, Dorothy Basemera the guest relations officer at Chimpanzee Trust that looks after 49 orphaned Chimps at Ngamba Island in Lake Victoria commented that “World Chimpanzee Day is a celebration of Chimpanzees and an opportunity to raise awareness about vital needs of worldwide participation in their care, protection, and conservation while in the wild and captivity.”

Dr. Jane Goodall a profound worldwide conservationist who spent most of her life studying about Chimpanzees said she hopes this day will create an awareness on the plight of Chimpanzee.

“Because of the threats faced by the chimpanzees, because they are so special, I do hope you will join us on this very first World Chimpanzee Day, to highlight the amazing nature of these beings, and to shed light on the threats that they face. So please do join us. Join us for them”.

The major aims of celebrating the day were to share understanding and inspiration by educating global audience about their importance and similarities to humans and raise awareness about threats they face in the wild including habitat loss, diseases and wildlife trafficking, promote their proper care in captive situations.

Some of the actives that were carried out included; tree planting, a visit Bagumirabingi forest one of the Chimpanzee corridors and Bugoma Central Forest Reserve which was affected by deforestation, habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict. Also conservationists visited the neighboring villages to assess and publicize the status of Chimpanzees.

Also in attendance was Dr. Joshua Rukundo, the acting executive director for Chimpanzee Trust and other wildlife stake holders.
