UWA Translocates Uganda Kobs in anticipation for Rhino Reintroduction

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has set in motion a remarkable conservation effort by relocating around 200 Uganda Kobs from Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve in Kikuube to Ajai Wildlife Reserve in Madi Okollo district. This endeavor forms part of a strategic plan to manipulate habitats in preparation for the anticipated reintroduction of White Rhinos at Ajai Wildlife Reserve in 2025.

Fred Kiiza, the chief warden overseeing Murchison Falls National Park, elucidated that the translocation operation is slated to span this week, with successive groups of Kobs being moved. He underlined that beyond readying the environment for white rhinos, the initiative is geared towards enriching the wildlife diversity at Ajai Wildlife Reserve, thereby amplifying tourism prospects not only in Madi Okollo district but also across the entire West Nile region.

Praising the government and UWA for honoring their commitment to replenish the once-neglected Ajai Wildlife Reserve with various wildlife species in anticipation of the white rhinos’ return, Joanne Aniku Okia, the Madi Okollo district Woman MP, expressed heartfelt appreciation towards the translocation efforts.

Scovia Acan, the councilor representing Pawor sub-county, echoed the sentiments, highlighting the longstanding aspiration of the people in Madi Okollo district and the broader West Nile sub-region to revive Ajai Wildlife Reserve. Such a move is seen as instrumental in fortifying the region’s tourism sector.

In November 2023, UWA unveiled a roadmap, setting forth plans for the White Rhino’s reintroduction to their native habitat at Ajai Wildlife Reserve by 2025. Covering an expanse of 166 square kilometers, Ajai Wildlife Reserve is distinguished for its unique flora and fauna and was once home to Southern White Rhinos in Uganda.

The ongoing translocation of Uganda Kobs stands as a testament to Uganda’s commitment to wildlife conservation and sustainable ecotourism development. As the countdown to the White Rhinos’ homecoming continues, these conservation efforts are poised to rejuvenate and reinvigorate Uganda’s natural heritage for generations to come.
