ZCT Warns Hotels Against Operating Tours and Transfers

In a recent statement, the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT) condemned the direct participation of accommodation providers and hotels in tour operations and transfers, stating that this violates the tourism regulations governing tours and transfers.

The commission also highlighted how crucial it is that accommodation providers and hotels follow tourism regulations, especially when it comes to arranging excursions and transfers rather than hiring local tour operators.

According to Law No. 6 of 2009, Article 19(a), a hotel or guest house shall not be licensed to operate as a tour or travel agent except with consent from the commission.

According to a statement issued by Hafsa H. Mbamba, the Executive Secretary at the commission, it is highly recommended that hotels and accommodation facilities comply with the regulations as all tours, excursions, or transfers have to be arranged through locally based tour operators registered with ZCT, and failure to comply will result in a US$10,000 fine and/or revocation of the operational license.

The commission will further review practices and ensure all arrangements comply with ZCT regulations. Additionally, the commission also encourages tour operators to secure or renew their licenses in case they expire.
