During the summit, the Ugandan team presented the country’s iconic brand, “Explore Uganda, The Pearl of Africa,” to the delegates, solidifying its dedication to preserving its natural treasures, promoting cultural exchange, and empowering local communities through tourism.

In his welcome address, UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili emphasized the organization’s vision for African tourism, focusing on strong governance, education, job creation, innovation, Brand Africa promotion, travel facilitation, and growth through investment and public-private partnerships.

Minister Hon. Tom Butime emphasized that Uganda’s active involvement in UNWTO activities aligns with the country’s commitment to sustainable tourism development. He expressed excitement at collaborating with the global tourism community to achieve the shared vision of responsible and sustainable tourism.

Joining the UNWTO as a member, Uganda is set to reap a plethora of advantages, including access to valuable tourism research and data, technical assistance, capacity-building initiatives, and networking opportunities with industry leaders worldwide. The membership is expected to enhance Uganda’s reputation as a premier tourist destination, attracting even more visitors seeking unforgettable experiences.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic’s challenges, UNWTO’s latest data indicates that tourism across Africa is steadily recovering, with international arrivals reaching 88% of pre-pandemic levels at the end of the first quarter of 2023. Globally, international tourism receipts soared to USD 1 billion in 2022, representing a 50% growth compared to the previous year.

Lilly Ajarova, CEO of the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), expressed optimism about the country’s tourism sector’s resurgence. She acknowledged that UNWTO membership would serve as a catalyst for rejuvenating the industry, fostering economic growth, and providing livelihood opportunities for local communities. The summit emphasized the sector’s crucial role as a driver of development and opportunity across the African region, highlighting the potential for job creation and increased investments.

Uganda’s embrace of the global tourism agenda and its commitment to sustainable practices solidify its position as an emerging tourism hub in Africa. With its breathtaking natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and dedication to preserving its environment, Uganda is set to captivate the hearts of travelers seeking authentic and responsible tourism experiences. As the tourism sector rebounds, Uganda’s journey as “The Pearl of Africa” continues to shine brightly on the world stage.
